Bienville Orthopaedic Specialists Brings First Endoscopic Spine Surgeries to the Mississippi Gulf Coast

Dr. Joseph Cox Performs First-Ever Arthrex Endoscopic Spine Procedures at Bienville Surgery Center

Bienville Orthopaedic Specialists is proud to announce a significant advancement in spine care for the Mississippi Gulf Coast. On April 29, 2026, fellowship-trained spine surgeon Dr. Joseph Cox successfully performed the first-ever Endoscopic Spine surgeries on the Mississippi Gulf Coast using the innovative Arthrex® Endoscopic Spine System at Bienville Surgery Center.

This milestone represents a new era in minimally invasive spine treatment, bringing patients access to cutting-edge technology designed to reduce tissue disruption, minimize recovery time, and help individuals return to their daily activities faster.

A New Evolution in Spine Care

Endoscopic spine surgery is considered one of the most advanced minimally invasive techniques available in modern spine care. Unlike traditional spine procedures that may require larger incisions and greater disruption of surrounding muscles and tissues, endoscopic techniques utilize a small camera and specialized instruments inserted through an incision typically less than one centimeter in length.

According to Dr. Cox, the benefits for patients can be significant.
“Endoscopic spine surgery is the next evolution in modern spine care. This technique is referred to as ‘ultra minimally invasive.’ The incision for this technique is typically less than 1 cm, but through this small portal, we can remove herniated discs, take care of painful joints, or shave down bone spurs in a way that was not possible in the past. My goal with this ultra minimally invasive technique is to preserve as much normal anatomy as possible while providing pain relief, improved quality of life, and a return to desired activities quickly.”

Addressing Chronic Back Pain with Medial Branch Transection (MBT)

The procedures performed by Dr. Cox were Medial Branch Transections (MBT), an innovative endoscopic treatment designed to relieve chronic back pain caused by arthritic facet joints in the spine.

Facet joints are small joints located along the back of the spine that help provide stability and allow movement. Over time, arthritis and degeneration can cause these joints to become painful and significantly impact a person’s quality of life.

During an MBT procedure, the small sensory nerves responsible for transmitting pain signals from the affected facet joints are identified and interrupted using advanced endoscopic visualization. By addressing the source of pain through an ultra-minimally invasive approach, patients may experience substantial pain relief, improved mobility, and a quicker recovery compared to more traditional surgical options.

Benefits of Endoscopic Spine Surgery

Endoscopic spine procedures offer several potential advantages for appropriate candidates, including:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Less disruption of muscles and surrounding tissues
  • Reduced postoperative pain
  • Faster recovery times
  • Lower risk of complications
  • Earlier return to work, exercise, and daily activities
  • Outpatient treatment in many cases
The Arthrex Endoscopic Spine System provides surgeons with enhanced visualization and specialized instruments that allow treatment of spinal conditions through a tiny surgical portal while preserving healthy anatomy whenever possible.
